Made from Mercury plans and specifications and compared to a Mercury NOS shaft. The shafts are heat treated and hardened in the bearing area.  We have found that when used with reproduction gears the pinion gear should be installed on the shaft prior to assembling in the gear case.  NOS gears fit a little easier like they should.
